Gardeners Calendar

February

1.  beginning forcers may want to try forcing various cultivars of paperwhites.
2.  make sure forced bulbs whether in the fridge, under mulch or underground are getting plenty of water.
3.  forced bulbs that show elongating growth can be transitioned into a cool garage and then as buds show color they can come into the home.
4.  continue making cutting of ornamental sweet potato vine and coleus for favorite summer containers.
5.  February is a great month for pruning back any dead growth in shrubs or perennial beds.
6.  Mulch flower beds with a layer of shredded bark before the perennials and bulbs begin actively growing in March.
7.  Make sure any early bulbs are getting plenty of water if they are actively growing.
8.  If it is too cold to run your irrigation system, water early favorites by the bucketful with recycled water from the home.
 9.  place a small 1 gallon bucket under kitchen or bathroom faucets to catch unused water and recycle it!

March

Spring is here.

Make certain that all the trees shrubs bulbs and perennials have sufficient water in case there is little rain.\

Shred tree and shrub prunings and either compost them or use them for mulch.

Check the compost pile to see if it is moist enough. If you do not have worms in the bin try to get some from a local fishing supply place or from a friend or neighbor. They will add greatly to the quality of your compost.

Pick the daffodils before they dry up and share them with a friend/ They will soon be gone anyway so enjoy them while you can.

Starting seedling for the spring garden is not too early. Cuttings from houseplants will start quickly now for most species.

If you can find an untreated sweet potato at the grocery store put it in a container of water so that  it will send out shoots. These can be removed and rooted for planting after the weather warms.
